The Fellowship of the Ring : being the first part of The Lord of the Rings

Every time I return to Middle Earth, it's like visiting an old friend. The familiar faces, the smells of pipe smoke and trees, the quiet hum of the river – it all washes over me with a sense of peace and belonging. Tolkien's world-building is so immersive that I can almost feel the road going ever on beneath my feet and the cool breeze on my face.

The setting is truly a masterpiece, but it's not just that which draws me back. It's the characters. Frodo, with his quiet courage and unwavering determination; Gandalf, Sam all all the fellowship – these are people I've grown to love. Their journeys, their triumphs, and their struggles feel deeply personal.

Then there's the story itself. With each reread, I discover new nuances, hidden meanings, and deeper connections between the characters and the themes. I mentioned the sense of peace in my first paragraph. Of course that is how the story starts - it gets much darker, but that sense of peace is carried in the hearts of the characters as a sense of what is important, it is the reason they struggle against the darkness. This book reminds us what is important in life, in so many ways.

The Fellowship of the Ring is more than just a book; it's a world, a journey, and a friend. It's a place I can always return to and find solace, adventure, and a sense of wonder.

Après avoir lu le hobbit auquel je n'ai pas du tout accroché, j'ai décidé de donner une deuxième chance à l'univers de Tolkien et à sa plume.

Etonnamment, j'ai apprécié cette lecture. Je l'ai commencée avec beaucoup d'appréhension car ma lecture du hobbit a été très longue et pénible. Contrairement à ce dernier, le tome 1 du seigneur des anneaux ne m'a pas du tout semblé long. Certes, certaines scènes tirent en longueur et ont fait légèrement baissé ma note mais ce fut tout de même une lecture agréable.

J'ai beaucoup aimé découvrir des scènes et des décors que l'on ne retrouve pas dans les films. On rencontre également de nouveaux personnages qui apportent une nouvelle dimension à cet univers. Tout cela a beaucoup joué dans mon appréciation de ce livre, là où le hobbit ne m'a semblé être qu'une simple transposition avec le film car je n'y ai rien appris de nouveau.

Ce fut donc une assez bonne lecture de mon côté et je vous le conseille si vous êtes curieux et si vous souhaitez découvrir une nouvelle dimension de cet univers incroyable.

In 1980 Heinlein published a novel called The Number of the Beast. It involved parallel universes, The World as Fiction, and dragged in Lazarus Long, as Heinlein seemed to do in most of his later books. While parts of it were fun, it was also confusing and disjointed in my opinion. I will read any Heinlein for the writing alone, so I am a fan (in fact, I was for a time the webmaster for The Heinlein Society), but I can see that some of his stuff is better than others. So when I heard there was an alternate version of this novel, I had to check it out. And The Pursuit of the Pankera keeps the same basic setting and has the same beginning as The Number of the Beast, but I think it is much better. The plot is a lot more cohesive and the novel just flows in way the previous didn't. This is the one I will reread in the future. And as a huge fan of the Lensman universe the part of the book that goes there was quite a treat. For those who don't know, the idea of The World as Fiction is that fictional worlds are real in other universes, so the characters here visit Barsoom, Oz, and the Lensman universe. Tons of fun.
